Bedfordshire Police this afternoon said the woman had not been formally identified and did not disclose a cause of death.

However, a spokesman for the force said specially trained officers were supporting family members of the victim.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Moor from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit said: ‘Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this tragic time.

‘We have made good headway in these early stages of our investigation and continue to follow numerous lines of inquiry in order to ascertain the events that led to this death.

‘We used to play together with my sister Chris, who is the same age as the woman, running around on the estate as kids.’

Locals claim the woman is a married mother of two.
