Stephen Warnock has told Sky Sports News – as per Football Daily – that Tottenham star Emerson Royal was “pathetic” for going to ground and attempting to get Chelsea player Hakim Ziyech sent off, during Spurs’ 2-0 win over the Blues.
Royal, 24, is enjoying his best run of form at Spurs since joining the club from Barcelona. Goals against Manchester City and West Ham, massive performances against Fulham and then again against City. He impressed against Chelsea, too.
Indeed, it was his shot that was parried by Kepa Arrizabalaga and then cleared before Oliver Skipp slammed home the opener from 20 yards. Harry Kane got a late second after an Eric Dier header from a corner. A brilliant win for Spurs.
But it could have been different. An incident involving Richarlison and Hakim Ziyech saw Royal charge over, barging into Ziyech. He reacted, pushing Royal – but catching his face, and Royal went down. Warnock was not impressed.

“It was embarrassing from Emerson Royal. I was so angry when I saw it. You’re on VAR, everyone can see what you’re doing. He instigates the whole thing. They way he hits the ground, why try and do that? Pathetic. I was furious.”

Warnock is hardly wrong. While Ziyech was in the wrong for reacting, Royal was equally to blame. He did not need to charge over and barge into Ziyech. It was much ado about nothing. But ultimately, the right decision was made.
It is sad that these days, Royal would need to go down to make it obvious to the officials as to what happened. Both are to blame but Warnock is right, it is embarrassing to see players go down in the way Royal did on Sunday.
