Where is Shamima Begum now?

The legal bid to return to the UK by the 23-year-old woman Shamima Begum, who allegedly fled London to join ISIS, was rejected, so where is she now?

The British citizenship of the London-born woman was revoked in 2019 by Home Secretary Sajid Javid on the grounds of national security. That was challenged by Shamima and her legal team.

While Shamima’s lawyers have argued that she was a victim of trafficking at the age of 15 along with two of her friends, the commission in the recent appeal expressed a “credible suspicion” that she was illegally taken to Syria from the United Kingdom, reports BBC.

Where is Shamina Begum now?

Shamima reportedly lives in a detention camp in northern Syria.

She was 15 years old when she allegedly traveled to Syria in 2015 to “join ISIS”. Her legal team has said that the case is “nowhere near over” and the state’s decision will be challenged.

Her lawyers‘ argument was rejected previously when she was stripped of her citizenship in 2019. They argued in her favor in February 2020 that she has been “de facto stateless” since her citizenship was revoked.

The State Secretary responded by saying that Shamina is technically entitled to Bangladeshi citizenship owing to her origin, so they weren’t “legally obliged to allow her to keep her UK rights.”

The Supreme Court rejected her plea to return to the UK in 2021.

What is her story?

Shamima was one of the three British school girls that went missing in 2015, reports a BBC podcast. They were reportedly spotted by investigative journalist Josh Baker when they headed to Turkey and later crossed Syria.

There wasn’t much known about them for nearly four years, except conflicting reports about their whereabouts and alleged involvement with ISIS.

Reports claim Shamima was the only one to have been discovered after years, as one of her friends, Kadiza Sultana, reportedly passed away in a bombing raid in 2016. The state of the other girl, Amira Abse, remains unknown.

Shamina’s lawyers continue to argue that she is a victim who was allegedly “groomed and tricked” into joining ISIS.

She was married to a fighter

Shamima reportedly married a Dutch man named Yago Riedijk only days after arriving in Syria. They even share a son together.

The couple was separated when Yago was arrested and jailed for his alleged involvement with ISIS. He is currently said to be behind bars in a Kurdish-run prison in Syria.

He has been convicted in the Netherlands courts over his alleged membership with the organization and will be jailed on returning.
