Speaking on CBS Sports, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Liverpool’s loss to Real Madrid and the Reds’ backline.
It doesn’t take a footballing genius to realise that a defence that has conceded five goals at home hasn’t had the best day at the office, and Carragher hasn’t held back in his criticisms.
Carragher, uncharacteristically, took aim at Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman claimed on The Overlap a few months ago that Carragher wouldn’t get into this Liverpool team in his prime.
Carragher claimed that he would actually take the Dutchman’s place in the team these days as he struggles for form.

Carragher says he’d get in above Van Dijk
The pundit spoke about the Dutch defender.
“It’s completely fallen apart. We adore this manager and this team and they’ve done so much for this club and it hurts you to say anything negative. They’re eighth in the Premier League and have just been battered by Real Madrid. It’s nowhere near good enough. What makes me laugh, I’m not that bothered, but Virgil Van Dijk said I wouldn’t get into that back four two months ago, I think I’d take his place at the moment,” Carragher said.

Can’t argue
Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the best defenders in history, but he’s looking like a shell of himself at the moment.
As Carragher says, he’d probably get in the team ahead of Van Dijk at the moment, and, to be honest, it’s hard to argue against that.
At least a prime Carragher would put everything on the line for the team every single time he stepped onto the pitch, at the moment, Van Dijk looks rather uninterested at times.
Van Dijk needs to buck up his ideas.
