Jane Fonda, 85, on why workouts matter: ‘You have to be able to make love’

Jane Fonda’s still got it.

At 85 years old, the “Barbarella” beauty has a new movie out (“80 for Brady,” co-starring Sally Field, Lily Tomlin and Rita Moreno), is moving full steam ahead with her Fire Drill Fridays — and, after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in September, recently announced her cancer is in remission.

“I won,” Fonda quipped of the latter point at the launch of H&M Williamsburg’s Move Studio in New York Wednesday night, to cheers from the crowd.

Last year, the “Book Club” actress was named the face of the H&M Move campaign — a fitting gig considering her famous “Jane Fonda’s Workout” franchise, although during her Q&A, she admitted she wasn’t always big into breaking a sweat.

“I didn’t know that it was important to do ’til I was in my 30s. I had a ‘constant period’ all during school so that I couldn’t do gym — anything to get out of gym,” Fonda told press at the event.

“It wasn’t until my late 30s [or] early 40s that I started to actually become active … [and] life before I was active, it wasn’t nearly as good as when I started to move.”

“An exercise outfit helps because it sets this time apart from the rest of your day and makes it matter more!” Fonda wrote in “Jane Fonda’s Workout Book” in 1981.

In addition to noticing the “shape of [her] body” was changing when she began working out, Fonda also felt her mood lift.

“I come from a long line of really depressed people, and the best way to fight depression is to keep moving,” she said.

While the Oscar-winning octogenarian’s no longer trying to keep up with intense workouts — like the one fellow H&M Move campaign star (and Beyoncé’s go-to choreographer) JaQuel Knight led before she hit the stage — Fonda says she “[thanks] God every day” that she’s been exercising for decades.

“You’ve got to stay strong,” she said. “I have a grandson who’s 3 years old, and I can still pick him up. I mean, I have to bend my knees and, you know, it takes a long time to get him up there, but I can still pick him up. You want to be able to carry your own bags.”

Added Fonda, “You have to be able to, you know, make love. I don’t remember much [about that], but do I remember you need flexibility!”
