Hero Teen Shot Dead During Instagram Livestream

A Pennsylvania teen who jumped into a icy pond to rescue two young children who’d fallen in was shot and killed on an Instagram livestream over the weekend.

Anthony Alexander Jr was 16 last year when he heard screams coming from a pond in Collingdale Park on February 21 last year.

“They really needed help. I wasn’t going to sit there and let them drown like that,” Alexander told WPVI at the time.

Two girls and boy had fallen into the water. Alexander first tried to reach them with a stick and then jumped into the cold water and bringing one of the girls and the boy out. Police officers arrived on the scene and jumped in to get the other girl out.

Alexander and the two officers were feted by Collingdale officials.

The teens involved in the livestreamed shooting ran from the scene when Alexander was hit, but police tracked them down. Diamire Hickman, the 16-year-old who was handling the gun when he said it went off while the teens were passing it around, turned himself in and was charged as an adult with 3rd degree murder.

“We now have a young man, who as you pointed out, was very heroic last year. He’s now dead and you have two families who are dealing with the tragedy,” said Jack Stollsteimer, the Delaware County District Attorney.

“Why were these teenage children, why were they able to get these hands on these guns?” he said.
