A New Jersey woman was charged on Tuesday with allegedly using a fake birth certificate to enroll at a high school.
New Brunswick Public School District Superintendent Aubrey Johnson revealed that Hyejeong Shin, 29, attended classes at the local high school for four days. A source told New Brunswick Today that Shin claimed to be 15, but alarms were raised when officials could not identify her parent or guardian.
Students in New Jersey can attend school on a provisional basis before they are required to confirm their identity. After that, they are not eligible to attend classes.
A student told New Brunswick Today that Shin had asked some female students to “hang out” on a specific street. When they did not show up, Shin reportedly started acting weird around them. Another source told the news outlet that he believed Shin was trying to lure them to a street.
NJ.com reported that Shin graduated from Rutgers University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.

Shin is charged with providing a false government document with the intent to verify one’s identity or age. The New Brunswick Board of Education said they are reviewing their enrollment process in light of this incident.
