Mufti Abdul Gani Azhari Biography:- Veteran Islamic scholar Mufti Abdul Gani AZhariu from Kashmir has passed away. He was well over 100 years old. At Dar ul Aloom Deoband, where he was working after retiring from his position as the University of Kashmir’s Arabic department head, a man who had previously led the department passed away. At Saharanpur, he will be laid to rest at 2:00 PM. He was a renowned Arabic scholar and an expert on Naqishbandiya Silsila, going by the name Gani Azhari. He has long-term health issues.

Azhari, a Kashmiri Gujjar, was proud of his Gujjar heritage. To meet the needs of the Gurjar children, he founded Dar al-‘Ulum Nizamiyya Madinatul Islam at Badshahibagh (near Saharanpur). In Kashmir, he also founded religious seminaries such as Maktabah Anwar al Uloom in Kokernag and Darul Uloom Kawthariya close to Dachigam National Park. In Donipawa, Brakpora, Anantnag, he founded Darul Uloom Shah Wali Allah in 2003. Prior to entering the University of Kashmir, Azhari taught Arabic at Madinatul Uloom in Hazratbal, Srinagar, upon Shaikh Abdullah’s invitation. In Kashmir, Azhari was revered as a leading religious figure. He was the department’s head professor of Arabic at Kashmir University. He authored writings on the Naqshbandiyyah and showed a particular interest in the Qadiri order of Sufism.

Education
A polymath Sufi, Professor Azhari studied under Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. In 1922, he was born in Poonch and eventually moved to Sagam in Kokernag. He completed his education at Mazahir al Uloom Saharanpur and Darul Uloom Deoband. His PhD was earned at Jamia al-Azhari. In 1997, he gave up his position as the head of the University of Kashmir’s Arabic department.

Career
In Kashmir, Azhari was revered as a leading religious figure. He was the department’s head professor of Arabic at Kashmir University. He authored writings on the Naqshbandiyyah and showed a particular interest in the Qadiri order of Sufism. At a memorial service organised by the university, the chairman of the Arabic department, Salahuddin Tak, praised Azhari as “an distinguished instructor, a great academician, and an epitome of knowledge with exceptional skill in religious science.” Altaf Bukhari and Omar Abdullah were among the politicians who expressed sorrow over his passing. According to Abdullah, Azhari had “unparalleled depth of understanding, profundity of learning, and ease of illuminating explanation” and was a convincing, strong, and knowledgeable orator.

Death
On January 19, 2023, he passed away in Saharanpur. Academics from the University of Kashmir, including vice chancellor Nilofer Khan and registrar Nisar A Mir, as well as Nasir-ul-Islam, the current state grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed their condolences for his passing. At a memorial service given by the university, Azhari was remembered as “an excellent instructor, a distinguished academician, and an epitome of knowledge with exceptional competency in religious science” by Salahuddin Tak, the department’s current head professor.
