The two trains which collided in south Sydney this morning, resulting in multiple carriages derailing, were carrying only empty containers with no dangerous substances, it has been confirmed.

Pictures from the scene in Banksmeadow shortly after 6am showed 10 carriages had come off the track, with three lying on their side.

Firefighters were inspecting the scene to work out if any hazardous materials are involved, but have since departed.

“The incident occurred as the trains traversed onto the same track during shunting movements,” an Australian Rail Track Corporation representative said later this morning.

“There were no injuries and there were no dangerous goods on board the trains.”

The incident is now under investigation.

The derailed carriages will be recovered over the weekend.

Passenger services will not be affected.
