Answer: Yes.

A Sydney driver was recently fined $275 for “double parking” while he was waiting for a car spot in a public car park.

Despite being behind the wheel with the engine running, the local council officers who issued the fine said the driver was blocking other parked cars in, deeming it an offence.

This has left people confused about whether waiting for a car spot is in fact double parking and an offence.

In every state and territory except Queensland, you can be fined for stopping your car alongside a parked car on a public road.

So if you are waiting to park in an open car park on a public road, you can get stung by a parking ranger or police.
