While thousands stood in the streets outside the church, only a few guests were allowed inside the private funeral. Friends, family, and former colleagues were seated inside.

Among the guests was Charlotte Hawkins, who arrived at the church in a black jacket and fitting star-patterned dress.

She had been invited to the Cambridge professor’s funeral since she was a Motor Neuron Disease Association patron. She took on the role following her Father’s death to the condition.
