Power price relief is on the way with the government’s energy package expected to pass Parliament today.

The government has promised its legislation will make it easier to switch from gas power to electric power, with some of the hefty up-front costs to be removed.

It comes after the government struck a deal with the Greens, all but guaranteeing the bill’s successful passage.

The Greens say households will be hundreds and even thousands of dollars better off under the agreement.

The bill will temporarily cap the price of gas, and will introduce a stopgap code of conduct for gas companies.

A total of $1.5 billion will also be delivered in household and small business power subsidies.

The opposition is refusing to support the bill, after claiming to have only received the details of it late last night.

Parliament has been specially recalled for just today to vote on the bill.

The question now turns to when exactly households can expect to see some relief.
