Multiple police officers have been shot and an emergency situation has been declared after a man opened fire as police approached his Queensland property.

The emergency declaration was made for the town of Wieambilla, south of Chinchilla and about three hours west of Brisbane, just after 6pm on Monday.

It is understood at least four police officers were called to a house and were fired upon from inside as they neared – with two police officers shot and feared dead.

Another officer was shot in the leg and rushed to Chinchilla Hospital and yet another female officer was unaccounted for – but is understood to now have made it to safety.

Queensland Police said ‘several’ police crews are now in attendance at the property and residents within the declared zone must remain indoors.

“Wains Road is closed, and the declaration zone encompasses the area between Chinchilla Tara Rd, Wieambilla Rd, Bennetts School Rd, and Mary Street,” police said.

There could be two gunman who were wearing camouflage, a witness told The Courier Mail.
