Despite doctors’ best efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries and died at Royal North Shore Hospital overnight.
The alleged driver and three other passengers – two girls aged 16 and two boys aged 17 – remain in hospital.
Their conditions are believed to be stable.
Police officers and members of the public had to smash the windows to get the five teens in the vehicle out after the crash, which happened just before 5pm.
Superintendent Paul Devaney of the North Shore Police Area Command said police had abandoned a pursuit of the car due to the nature of its driving.

“This was a horrific incident that is likely to have lifelong consequences for all involved,” Devaney said.
Police said one of the girls, the alleged unlicensed driver of the sedan, suffered head and spinal injuries, while the second suffered head and facial injuries.
The males have a range of injuries, including head and chest injuries, spinal injuries and abdominal injuries.
The investigation will be subject to independent review.
A brief will now be prepared for the coroner.
