Suspected triggerman in the alleged gangland hit of Sydney’s ‘Mr Big’ is charged with murder – following the arrests of two men accused of being accomplices

  • A man, 26, has been arrested over the death of Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad, 39
  • Ahmad, known as Sydney’s ‘Mr Big’, was shot dead at Greenacre on April 27
  • Two other men were arrested in June and July over their alleged involvement

A third man has been charged over the shooting death of underworld crime boss Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad. 

Ahmad, 39, known as Sydney’s ‘Mr Big’, was shot dead on a suburban street after leaving a friend’s house in Greenacre, in the city’s southwest, on April 27. 

Two other men – aged 37 and 49 – were arrested in June and July over their alleged role in the gangland shooting.

A third man, 26, who is alleged to be the triggerman, was arrested during a vehicle stop at Campsie around 12.40pm on Wednesday.

Detectives from Strike Force Betta searched the man’s home and seized a number of his belongings for forensic examination. 

The man was taken to Campsie Police Station and charged with murder and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.

He was refused bail and will face Bankstown Local Court on Thursday.

The police investigation is ongoing. 

 

How shooting unfolded: Timeline of attack on Mahmoud Ahmad

Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad went to Narelle Crescent, Greenacre on Wednesday night to visit an associate.

Around 9.30pm, he was leaving when he was gunned down by ‘a large hail of bullets’ outside the home.

More than one person ‘lay in wait’ outside the house before opening fire.

Officers from Strike Force Raptor were in the area at the time and arrived to find a dying Ahmad lying in the street.

‘The movements of Brownie Ahmed are being investigated,’  Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.

‘He was at that address visiting an associate.

‘He’d been there for a little bit and was leaving.

‘What appears to be – whoever was in a car – as soon as he was out open in the street more than one person in that vehicle, someone’s fired shots at Brownie Ahmed

‘They’ve planned it. it’s well executed and I suppose it was a meticulous assassination of a person they were going to kill.’

‘They weren’t going to muck around with this one, that’s for sure.’
