A pilot was “extremely lucky” to walk away from a severe helicopter crash south of Tamworth, NSW this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a property on the New England Highway at Gowrie just before 1pm.

The 30-year-old pilot, the only person in the helicopter, pulled himself out of the crashed cabin and walked about a kilometre to a nearby farm home for help.

NSW Ambulance inspector Brian Lakin said the helicopter had flipped, landing upside down in a paddock.

“We treated him for cuts and bruises to his arms and legs before he was airlifted to hospital for further treatment,” Lakin said.

The pilot was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital in a stable condition.

Fire and Rescue NSW were at the property managing any hazards from the crash.

Local police are investigating the incident.
