An out-of-control bushfire is ripping through Springbrook in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

Residents have been told to prepare to leave as the slow-moving blaze moves towards homes in between Little Nerang Dam and Mount Nimmel Road.

However there are fears the situation could worsen with some of the flames reaching several metres high.

Firefighters are expected to work throughout the night to put in fire breaks and contain the blaze.

Residents are being told some properties are at risk.

The advice for those in the area is to keep their phones charged and keep items such as medication and personal documents close in case they need to leave.
