New Movies on Streaming: ‘Eddington,’ ‘Superman’ + More

Some of this year’s most-talked-about films are dropping on VOD this week, including Ari Aster’s bleak COVID-inspired offering Eddington, the latest entry in the Smurfs film franchise, and James Gunn’s variation on Superman.

Gunn’s fresh take on the Man of Steel has been critically praised, as has David Corenswet’s portrayal of the alien superhero. The new version arrives on demand this Friday and co-stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and Nathan Fillion.

These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.

Filmmaker Ari Aster’s Eddington can broadly be described as a bleak dark comedy about small town politics at the dawn of COVID in 2020. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the sheriff in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico, who runs for mayor against the town’s current mayor, played by Pedro Pascal. Playing on the political and social extremism that erupted at that time, their conflict leads to a violent showdown. The Eddington cast also includes, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.

2025’s Smurfs is an animated musical comedy based on the 1950s The Smurfs comic book series. The film, which arrived on demand earlier this week, stars Grammy-winning pop star Rihanna as Smurfette, the only female Smurf in her community. She’s joined by John Goodman as Papa Smurf, plus an impressively long list of actors including James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, and Kurt Russell.
