Meghan Markle now has a release date for Season 2 of her Netflix lifestyle show and a new deal with the streaming platform. However, her and Prince Harry‘s new deal is a far cry from the $100 million one the couple previously had with the company.
According to multiple reports, under the new contract, which has been called a “downgraded” deal, Netflix will hear the Sussexes’ ideas for any potential projects first before deciding whether to obtain the rights to them.
As one PR crisis expert explained, “Netflix has done a very neat job of pivoting away from two very expensive people who didn’t deliver, and they’ve taken that deal off the table, and they’ve given them a modest one.”
But with only one project from the Sussexes that was a success for Netflix, some have wondered why the streamer giant is still in business wth them at all. Well now, a royal commentator is claiming that it all has to do with the possibility of the prince and former Suits star getting divorced one day. Here’s more on how that would really benefit Netflix, plus the latest reactions to the trailer of With Love, Meghan.
Season 2 of Meghan’s show was shot at the same time as season 1. However, Netflix decided to split the series into two parts and release them separately. The first one premiered in March, and the second will be available for streaming on Aug. 26.
The trailer for With Love, Meghan Season 2 was released on Aug. 12. The new season shows the duchess with more of a willingness to watch and learn than the first season, which portrayed her as an expert. She also excitedly welcomes a few celebrity guests and Hollywood pals including Chrissy Teigen, podcaster Jay Shetty, and Queer Eye star Tan France, as well as chefs Clare Smyth, Jose Andres, and David Chang.
But so far, commenters are not impressed with the trailer as the vast majority are negative.
One person wrote, “Love how the trailer is basically ‘famous people agree with Meghan’ set to the same soundtrack used in wedding videos since 2009.” While a second posted, “Here we go again!! Can’t wait for the scene where Meghan says ‘this is who I really am’ in a dress that costs more than my car.”
And another added, “MM ability to turn very ordinary things that almost everyone on earth does daily into some self-congratulatory achievement worthy of a Nobel Prize is unrivalled. Almost beyond parody.”
Expert says the only reason Netflix is keeping the Sussexes close is in case of a divorce
During an episode of Talk TV, To Di For Daily podcast host and royal expert Kinsey Schofield explained more about what Meghan and Harry’s downgraded “first-look” deal with Netflix means.
When show host Jeremy Kyle questioned why Netflix would even continue anything with the Sussexes, Schofield said: “I think it was to save them both from embarrassment, and Netflix doesn’t want to go to their investors and explain the $100 million return on investment failure.”
The commentator then added, “There is a theory floating around that I’m confident in as well. That Netflix wants to be there for Meghan if, and we don’t hope it doesn’t, but if the marriage were to ever fail, Netflix wants first dibs in what Meghan could potentially do in reaction to that.”
