Why Pete Alonso’s record-breaking moment means so much to the Mets

“History” doesn’t follow “Mets” as naturally as it does for some teams, we can admit it, doesn’t linger like it does with Mystique and Aura in The Bronx, isn’t ingrained like it is for some of New York’s older outfits in blue.

The flip side is that Mets history is still available, it’s still possible, it’s still happening.

And when it does, from the Franchise, from the Captain, from the tatters of Johan Santana’s left arm or from getting through Buckner, it is especially savored.

That’s what happened at a joyful Citi Field on Tuesday night, when Pete Alonso became the Mets’ all-time leading home run hitter, eclipsing Darryl Strawberry’s franchise record with his 253rd career homer.
