For three seasons, Sex and the City fans bemoaned And Just Like That… They complained about Kim Cattrall’s absence, lashed out at the writers, and questioned whether the original’s beloved characters had been replaced with pod people. While there were bumps and growing pains, the reboot did bring Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York back to fans. They’ll have to bid them farewell once again. While the iconic characters of Sex and the City were introduced to fans 27 years ago, there are still aspects of their lives that remain unknown. These are four things we wish we had learned about the iconic Sex and the City characters before their story came to a close.
We never learned whether or not Carrie Bradshaw was an only child
Carrie Bradshaw served as the central character in Sex and the City, both movies and the reboot. She was the glue that tied the friend group together. She made them her family. Perhaps that is why we never learned much about her biological family (unless you believe The Carrie Diaries is part of the show’s cinematic universe). Before the sun set on the beloved character, we would have liked to learn whether Carrie had siblings or not and what became of her biological family.
In The Carrie Diaries, she has a sister named Dorrit. That sister is never mentioned in the original series, and Carrie only ever breathes one word about her family. She reveals her father “quit” on her and her mom when she was little. That’s it. A touch of backstory on her family would have been a nice way to say goodbye to the iconic sex columnist. Maybe it would have explained her stalking tendencies.
‘Sex and the City’ never explained where Charlotte got all of her post-divorce money
Charlotte York and Trey MacDougal were married for just a short time. The former gallerina gave up her job after their wedding. She didn’t return to a paid position until And Just Like That... Charlotte also signed a prenuptial agreement. It didn’t entitle her to an endless amount of money for the rest of her life, though.

Sure, she was given her apartment in the divorce, and we assume, a cash settlement, but was it enough to make her independently wealthy? We would have loved an explanation for Charlotte’s financial freedom. Yes, it’s assumed she came from a wealthy family, based on her wedding announcement, but she never actually explained how she funded her life in New York City between her first and second marriages.
Viewers never learned where Samantha Jones came from, or where she went to college
Samantha Jones, like Carrie Bradshaw, was an enigma throughout her time on Sex and the City. Every so often, the series would hint at her less-than-ideal upbringing. Still, fans never actually learned much about her family. Samantha once quipped that her mother was “saddled” with three kids and a drunk husband by the time she was her age. She mentioned serving dilly bars at Dairy Queen as a kid. Samantha even talked about her college life, when she mentioned an abortion she had as a college student.
Still, she never gave details. A little glimpse into Samantha’s earlier life, like the town she grew up in and the college she attended, would have gone a long way in rounding out the character. While she seemed sex-crazed, Samantha showed moments of deep insecurity and personal struggle. We would have liked to see the show delve a bit deeper into her origin story, so we could have understood her better.
Miranda and Steve never discussed not having more children
Miranda Hobbes was the first of the foursome to have kids. She was initially a reluctant mother. Still, it was clear that she loved her son and found joy in raising him. At least, as long as she had the help of Magda and Steve. While Steve and Miranda ended up together, they never had any more children, despite having a hardworking nanny and a house big enough for a second child. That’s not to say they needed to, but they also never discussed it.

As And Just Like That… draws to a close, we would have liked to understand the inner workings of Miranda and Steve’s now-broken marriage. Did they opt out of having more kids? Did his one testicle and her lazy ovary prevent conception from happening again? We’ll never know the answer.
And Just Like That… will end the ladies’ stories with a two-part finale on August 7 and August 14. It appears we have heard the last from Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha, but it’s been a glorious ride.
