This image taken from a video shows one of the first tsunami waves hitting the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk at Paramushir island, in Russia’s Kuril Islands, which are in the far east of the country (east even of Japan and close to where the earthquake struck).
Ports on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula flooded as residents fled inland.
