Rotimi Sankore Biography: Portrait of a Brilliant Policy Expert

Rotimi Sankore (Born in Lagos on June 5, 1968) worked in journalism at the local, continental, and global levels, working in and managing many organizations that promoted journalism practice, human rights, good governance, and human equality. Sankore was an author, trainer, researcher, and leader.

He was the Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief of the Africa facility for Development Journalism, a facility that provided strategic communication support to groups working to impact social, political, and economic change in Africa.

The renowned journalist was previously the chair of the editorial board of Nigeria Info Radio Group, a division of AIM Media Group that runs 13 stations in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Onitsha (including Nigeria Info, WaZoBia, Cool FM, and Arewa Radio Stations), according to Edugist, an education and news platform.

During the Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015), he served as the first Editor-in-Chief of Africa Human & Social Development Information, which was a pioneer in the use of data and statistics for journalism and policy advocacy.

Sankore was the original editor of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) website for African journalists covering issues related to democracy, human rights, corruption, and public accountability in the middle to late 1990s.

Edugist claims that the deceased worked with or contributed to some publications, including the Global New African Magazine, The Journalist (UK), Guardian Newspapers (Nigeria), The Guardian UK, Global Index on Censorship, Mail & Guardian (South Africa), the Global New African Magazine, and The News and Tempo Weekly Magazines (Nigeria) in the early 1990s.

In addition, he was a broadcast journalist who hosted Nigeria Info Radio’s flagship series, The Public Square, which covered issues related to government, democracy, development, and policy.

He consults and manages projects for partnership efforts with UNFPA, UNAIDS, WHO, the Africa Development Bank, the African Union Commission, the Geneva-based Global Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, and others as part of his advocacy work for global and African development.

Sankore is survived by his mother, daughter, and brother. The family will announce the funeral arrangements in due course.
