He and his younger brother Adrian have Italian and Jewish German ancestry on their father’s side. Nivola grew up in a few different cities, dividing his time between Boston, Burlington, Vermont, and Washington, DC. In Burlington, he attended the Mater Christi School. Nivola went on to attend Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, followed by Yale University in Connecticut. He graduated from Yale in 1994 with a BA in English.

Film Career

Nivola made his big-screen debut in 1997 with a supporting role in the period coming-of-age film “Inventing the Abbotts.” He had a bigger role later that year, playing the brother of Nicolas Cage’s character in John Woo’s science-fiction action film “Face/Off.” Nivola subsequently had his first two starring roles in 1998: in the crime film “I Want You” and the prison dramedy “Reach the Rock.” The following year, he starred in the crime drama “Best Laid Plans” and played Henry Crawford in Patricia Rozema’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Mansfield Park.” In his first film of the new millennium, Nivola starred as King Ferdinand of Navarre in Kenneth Branagh’s modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost.” He went on to act in “Timecode,” “Jurassic Park III,” “Laurel Canyon,” “Carolina,” and “The Clearing.” Nivola had one of his most prolific years in 2005, appearing in four films: “Junebug,” “The Sisters,” “Turning Green,” and “Goal!” Over the remainder of the decade, he was in such films as “Grace is Gone,” “The Girl in the Park,” “The Eye,” “Who Do You Love?,” and “Coco Before Chanel.”

In 2007, Nivola returned with a role in the TNT miniseries “The Company,” based on Robert Littell’s novel of the same name. Following another considerable break, Nivola produced and acted on the British comedy series “Doll & Em,” which ran from 2014 to 2015. In 2017, he portrayed Mark Madoff in the HBO biographical television film “The Wizard of Lies.” Concluding the decade, Nivola starred in the four-part Channel 4 drama “Chimerica,” based on the play by Lucy Kirkwood. In late 2020, he played Mr. Dean in a miniseries adaptation of “Black Narcissus,” and in 2022 he voiced Richard Brooks and Robert Redford in the documentary miniseries “The Last Movie Stars.” Nivola’s subsequent credits include the 2024 Apple TV+ biographical miniseries “The Big Cigar,” in which he portrays film and television producer Bert Schneider.

In early 2003, Nivola married actress Emily Mortimer. Together, they have a son named Sam and a daughter named May, both of whom act. Nivola and Mortimer have a production company called King Bee Productions.
