Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess joined Championship side Swansea City on a three-year deal in June – and now he is set to rub shoulders with US rap superstar Snoop Dogg, who has become the club’s new co-owner.
It comes ahead of Burgess’ likely selection for Australia by coach Tony Popovic ahead of the World Cup next year.
‘My love of football is well known, but it feels special to me that I make my move into club ownership with Swansea City,’ Snoop Dogg, 53, said in a statement.
‘The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working-class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me.
‘I’m proud to be part of Swansea City. I am going to do all I can to help the club.’
Swansea City’s ownership group plans to use Snoop’s celebrity status to increase the profile of the squad as they seek Premier League promotion from the Championship.

The ownership group said in a statement: ‘To borrow a phrase from Snoop’s back catalogue, this announcement is the next episode for Swansea City as we seek to create new opportunities to boost the club’s reach and profile.
‘Snoop’s colossal global fanbase and audience will certainly help us do that.
‘He has made clear to us throughout this process just how excited he is at the prospect of joining the club.’
With 35 million albums sold worldwide, and a social media following exceeding 100 million users, Snoop Dogg’s presence offers potential for the club to reach a new audience.
Swansea City chief executive Tom Gorringe also stated he is ‘delighted’ to have the rap legend on board with the Swans.
‘(Snoop) Dogg is passionate about this project and helping us continue to raise the profile of the club to as wide an audience as possible.’
Luka Modric, a former Ballon d’Or winner and fan favourite at Tottenham, also acquired a stake at Swansea in April.
Last year, Snoop Dogg told the Daily Record: ‘I love what Ryan (Reynolds) has done with Wrexham. It’s just a great story.

‘Investing in a sports team has been something I have been looking at for a long time.’
The artist famed for the track Drop It Like It’s Hot also previously considered investing in Scottish giants Celtic.
‘I have watched so much soccer in Europe but I have never seen fans like the Celtic fans. There is something so special about them,’ he said.
‘There is a reason why their fans are talked about across Europe. The best players and coaches in the world tell you there is nowhere like Celtic Park and I want to be a part of that.
‘Their mascot is a hound. You couldn’t make that up. Snoop Dogg becomes Hoopy the Hound – that’s a match made in heaven. The headlines write themselves.’
