There's a Trial in the UK This Week for Two Men Accused of Attacking Police

Last summer there was a brawl between police and two men in a UK airport. But the way most people learned about it was from a viral video of a police officer kicking a man in the head. Here’s the video.

This became a big story in the UK. There were protests outside the police station by other Muslims. The officer was pulled off duty and a lawyer for the man being kicked made a series of claims suggesting the attack on his client was possibly racist and that it was an “an attempted assassination.”

Eventually, a fuller picture of what happened emerged. It allegedly started with someone on the plane saying something racist to the grandmother the two men had come to pick up. She then saw the person as they were past a Starbucks inside the terminal. That’s when Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, went to confront the person. The argument escalated and Amaaz headbutted this person in the face and then threw two punches as well. It was all caught on camera.

Police were called because of the assault and they attempted to arrest Amaaz. He fought back, punching two female police officers in the face and then attacking a male officer from behind and beating on his head. That officer had a taser in his hand and tazed Amaaz which is how he wound up face down on the ground. Here’s what happened.

So, to recap, Mohammed Fahir Amaaz headbutted and punched a stranger in the airport. Then when police showed up to arrest him, he tried to kick one officer, punched a female officer in the nose, breaking her nose, punched another female officer in the face twice then attacked a male officer from behind and punched him several times. And he’s claiming all of this was self-defense.

You may notice that the female officer whose nose was broken, PC Lydia Ward, initially stayed with the attempt to control the situation but after a moment you can hear her sobbing. Video was just released showing her at the scene with blood running down her face.

She described what happened to her in court today.

PC Ward said: “I was trying to keep hold of Mr Amaaz’s arm and get it behind his back so I could get some cuffs on him.”

She said she recalled that PC Zachary Marsden fell or was pushed towards some seats and that Mr Amaaz then kicked out at her colleague.

PC Ward added: “I tried to grab him off so he could stop kicking PC Marsden. All I remember then is that he turned and he punched me straight in the face.”

“I can’t really remember where it landed but I know where my injuries were. I remember falling on the floor and everything went black.”…

“As I came round, all I could feel was blood pouring out of my nose. I was just thinking he has done something to my nose, face area, I didn’t know what has happened.”

“I was terrified to be honest. I was absolutely terrified. I had never experienced that level of violence towards me in my life.

The defense is claiming that Amaaz was defending himself because he thought he was under attack by unknown assailants. PC Ward didn’t buy that explanation:

PC Ward said: “I don’t know how he felt I was an assailant. He turned towards me and punched me in the face.

“He could see I was a police officer and he could see I was a female as well.”

As an American who has seen this type of selective release of video to frame the police many times, I hope the UK jury doesn’t fall for this BLM inspired defense. Amaaz threw at least 8 punches and injured four people, three of them police officers in uniform.

Did he deserve a kick in the face? Probably not, but given the violence he had unleashed seconds earlier without provocation, the jury should not let it interfere with a guilty verdict that sends him to prison for a few years.
