Two people have been rushed to hospital after a six-vehicle crash closed four lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, sparking major peak hour traffic and public transport chaos.

Emergency services rushed to the southern end of the bridge near Millers Point shortly after 8am on Wednesday.

An injured occupant was briefly trapped, according to Fire and Rescue NSW.

A heavy presence of emergency service responders remain on scene.

The crash has brought Sydney traffic to a standstill, also sparking public transport chaos as commuters scrambled to find alternative routes to get to work. 

Two of out three southbound lanes on the bridge remain closed.

Two of the three northbound lanes have also been shut down.

A 16km traffic jam extends from Artarmon on the north shore to inner-city Drummoyne.

There are also long queues of commuters at bus stops and Metro stations on the north shore.

‘Traffic is heavy in both directions approaching the bridge and on the bridge, so allow plenty of extra travel time,’ the latest Live Traffic NSW alert states.

Some buses are delayed up to 30 minutes.

Footage showed a man on a stretcher being placed into the back of an ambulance.

Paramedics treated three patients at the scene. 

One was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital while another was transported to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Both suffered minor injuries and are in stable conditions.
