Kyle MacLachlan explains what kept him from returning to ‘And Just Like That…’ in season 3 of the series

And Just Like That… is officially into its third season. While many fan-favorite characters have returned to the series, there are many more Sex and the City personalities fans would like to check in on. Trey MacDougal, Charlotte York’s first husband, is one of those characters. They almost got their wish. The production team attempted to secure Kyle MacLachlan, the actor who took on the role, but he ultimately decided to pass on the project. MacLachlan recently revealed why he chose not to reprise his role, and whether he’d still be open to returning.

MacLachlan was offered a role in ‘And Just Like That…’

Trey MacDougal might not have been in Charlotte York’s life for very long, but the romance had a significant impact on Sex and the City fans. It was so impactful that the team behind And Just Like That… wanted to expand on his story a bit more. Kristin Davis revealed that Kyle MacLachlan was offered the chance to reprise his role in the reboot back in March.

On her podcast, Are You a Charlotte? Davis revealed that MacLachlan was in talks to return for season 3, but didn’t care for the storyline and opted out. Davis said that while she was initially “mad” at MacLachlan, she now understood his perspective.

The famed actor recently explained why he passed on the project

Kyle MacLachlan has finally opened up about his decision to pass on reprising his role as Trey MacDougal. Us Weekly recently caught up with Kyle MacLachlan and asked him about his decision to turn down the offer. He told the outlet that he was totally into the idea of returning to the series and “having fun,” but he had requirements. The storyline had to do his character justice.

MacLachlan explained that he didn’t think the story offered by the production team really honored the relationship Charlotte and Trey shared. He isn’t against the idea of showing up next season if the writers’ idea honors Trey and Charlotte’s earlier bond, though.

MacLachlan’s decision not to reprise his role was clearly a difficult one; the actor appears attached to Trey MacDougal. MacLachlan even revealed that he’s given some thought to Trey’s current life. He told Us Weekly that if he had any pull, his character would no longer be living in New York, having given up his career in medicine to pursue winemaking. He thinks Trey would live in Napa, which is where Mr. Big moved ever-so-briefly during the tail end of the original series. MacLachlan last portrayed Trey during season 6 of Sex and the City.
