Michigan Charter School Teacher Arrested After Telling Co-Worker About Sex with Student

A former Michigan charter school teacher is facing charges after police say she “exploited” a minor through a 2023 sexual relationship.

FOX 2 Detroit reports that 26-year-old Jocelyn Sanroman has been charged with third-degree sexual conduct.

In 2023, while teaching at Oakside Prep Academy—a charter school in Waterford Township—Sanroman allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

The incident unfolded when a parent contacted police, sparking an investigation, after the defendant allegedly told a co-worker she has sex with a student.

“This defendant is accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. “These allegations represent the ultimate breach of trust placed in educators by parents and the community.”

McDonald added that although a 16-year-old can consent to sexual relations in Michigan, it’s illegal when an educator is involved.

“It’s because we need to make school the safest place it can be for kids, right? Safe from gun violence, safe from assault, safe from sexual assault,” McDonald said. “School is supposed to be some place where your kids feel safe.”

The school released the following statement after learning of the alleged incident:

“We strive to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the students entrusted to our care. Their safety and well-being remains our top priority.”

Sanroman faces a possible 15 years in prison if convicted. Check back for updates.
