Australia’s south will once again feel an icy nip in the air for the rest of the week, as a cold front freezes the region.

Chilly nights and mornings are forecast through until the end of the weekend, with temperatures dropping between -2 degrees to -4 in south-eastern Australia, including in the capital cities.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jonathan How said temperatures this morning were below freezing in Sydney as people made their morning commute.

“It is also quite windy across Sydney at the moment, and also very cold … the feels like temperature at the airport is around zero,” he said this morning.

“For Western Sydney, the feels-like temperature is around -1, so very wintry out there.”

In Canberra, the feels-like temperature dropped below freezing to -4 degrees by 7am, increasing slightly to 0.1 degrees by 9am.

At Melbourne Airport, the feels-like temperature was 1.2 degrees at 7am, inching up to 3.8 degrees by 9am.

In Adelaide, the feels-like temperature was 5.8 degrees, rising to 6.6 degrees by 9am.

In Hobart, the feels-like temperature was a near-feezing 1.1 degrees at 7am, barely moving to 1.3 degrees by 9am.

Similar temperatures are expected again tomorrow morning and tonight.

The cold mass brought snow to NSW overnight and it will bring frost to the entire eastern coast, including Queensland.

“We have seen some very healthy snow dumps across the alpine resorts. Also, snow across Oberon last night,” How said.

“We are seeing that snow gradually easing up and contracting to higher territory through today, but we are in for some very frosty nights.

“Widespread frost is expected today across NSW, all the way up into southern Queensland.”
