The 46-year-old man has been charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault after 25-year veteran of the force Constable Keith Anthony Smith, 57, was killed in the line of duty in North Motton.

Smith had attended the property at Allison Road in North Motton at around 11am on Monday to execute a court-issued warrant to repossess the residence when he was allegedly shot by the resident.

The charged man appeared in a bedside court sitting and remains in hospital under police guard where he is receiving medical care for non-life threatening injuries.

He will front court at a later date.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams thanked the officers involved in the incident for their “dedication and professionalism”.

“I want to sincerely thank all those who have played a part in this investigation,” Adams said.

“Their diligent work in such difficult circumstances is to be commended.

“The support our members have shown for Constable Keith Smith’s family and loved ones, and each other, is testament to the strength of our blue family.”

Earlier this week, Adams said Smith had a “distinguished career” with Tasmania Police and was highly regarded by his colleagues.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff also said the “tragedy” had rocked the community, which shared in the grief of Smith’s loved ones.

“A proud and brave Tasmanian man, Constable Keith Smith, started his day by putting on his Tasmania Police Union form,” Rockliff said.

“A day that began like many others, tragically, Constable Smith did not return home.”
