A man has been arrested over a road rage stabbing that unfolded after a pre-dawn car crash in regional NSW on Thursday.
The terrifying incident began around 4.40am when a 40-year-old man, bleeding from stab wounds, staggered into Cessnock Police Station.
He told officers he had been driving a Holden sedan along Cessnock Road when it collided with a Subaru.
Moments after the crash, a passenger from the Subaru allegedly lunged at him and stabbed him in the leg.
The stabbing victim was treated by paramedics at the station before being taken to hospital for further care.
Hunter Valley officers had attended the crash scene at Cessnock Road, Neath, west of Newcastle.
The Subaru and its occupants were still at the crash site and police arrested a 34-year-old man. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
