James Beard Awards: Kumiko wins Outstanding Bar, Oriole's Noah Sandoval wins Best Chef Great Lakes

CHICAGO (WLS) — Once again, Chicago’s top culinary talent showed up and showed off at Lyric Opera of Chicago for what has been dubbed the “Oscars of the food world.”

“Were here to show the world that we are the culinary capital,” said Sam Toia with the Illinois Restaurant Association.

The food and drink scene in Chicago just added more James Beard Award winners to the city’s already growing list, affirming the city’s status as a food destination.

“Over the course of my lifetime, it’s gone from being a decent place to eat to a global power house in the food world. So, if not here, where?” said host Andrew Zimern, who is also a past James Beard Award winner.

Five Chicago restaurants were nominated in multiple categories.

Kumiko in the Fulton River District took home the honor of Outstanding Bar. It’s known for its seasonal tasting menus and drink pairing options.

“To anyone who feels like they don’t belong in this industry… Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Domo arigato,” said Julia Momosé, the owner, bartender and creative force behind Kumiko.

Noah Sandoval from Oriole in the Fulton River District earned the title of Best Chef for the Great Lakes region.

This is the fourth time a Chicago chef has taken home the title in the past five years. Tim Flores won in 2023, Genie Kwon won in 2022, and Erick Williams won in 2021.

Chris Jung and his partner, Erling Wu-Bower, from Maxwell’s Trading in West Town and Thai Dang from Haisous in Pilsen were also nominated for Best Chef for the Great Lakes region this year.

South Side staple Lem’s BBQ walked in to the ceremony, already a winner.

“This is a family legacy that we have continued, started by my dad’s two brothers and my father,” said Carmen Lemons with Lem’s BBQ.

The restaurant was named an “American Classic” by the James Beard Foundation.

And Galit in Lincoln Park was nominated for Outstanding Restaurant, nationwide.

Galit specializes in Middle Eastern dishes and unique beverages. ABC7 is still waiting to hear who took home that award.

The James Beard Foundation has been recognizing top talent in the culinary world for decades.

Monday marked the 35th award ceremony and the 10th year Chicago has served as the host city.
