Police believe a “gruesome” suspected murder in Sydney’s south-west is a “drug deal gone horribly wrong”.

Emergency services called to a welfare check at a home in Croydon Park about 5pm today found a man believed to be in his 50s dead with what Superintendent Christine McDonald described as “horrific” stabbing injuries.

A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Burwood police station where he was helping police with their inquiries tonight.

Police set up a crime scene at the Kembla Street house and began a homicide investigation.

“What I can say is this is a gruesome crime,” McDonald said.

“The man’s injuries are horrific.

“And what we know from very preliminary investigations is that this, we believe this is a drug deal gone horribly wrong.”

Police believed the weapon used in the suspected murder remained at the scene.

The Burwood police area commander said she didn’t believe the pair were related and it was unclear if they knew each other.

She also couldn’t say whose house it was or who else was there at the time.

“I’ve literally come down from the police station straight away to be here with my officers, to thank them for being here so quickly, and to be amongst the community down here who I know would be shocked that something that has happened, something so brutal, has happened in their street,” McDonald said.

“The injuries of the man are horrific, as I mentioned. We will work through what those injuries are.

“We will work through what has occurred here this afternoon and piece it all together.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
