The body of a man has been found during a search on a lake in the NSW Hunter region for a missing fisherman yesterday.

Police were called about 4pm to Summerland Point, Lake Macquarie, about 130km north of Sydney, following reports an 82-year-old man had not returned from a fishing trip.

Officers, with help from Marine Rescue NSW and Surf Life Saving NSW, arrived and began searching for him after his boat was found abandoned.

A helicopter deployed by searchers helped find a man’s body in the water about 7.40pm.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
