‘Sluggish’ 4-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized With .29 BAC Was Given Drink by Teacher

An Alabama teacher was arrested on Wednesday for giving a 4-year-old girl alcohol last month.

The Collins-Rhodes Elementary School student said special education teacher Tracy Walker gave her an alcoholic drink around naptime on April 28. The girl appeared severely sick when her parents picked her up from school that day — leading them to take her to the hospital, according to WALA.

“Normally, this child is one of the first ones awake — she’s happy, and she wants to get on with her day. When she [an aide] noticed that something was amiss, she went over and tried to wake the child up. The child awoke and was very sluggish,” Mobile County deputy Lonnie Parsons said.

The girl reportedly spent two days in the ICU. A toxicology report stated the girl’s blood alcohol content was nearly 0.29 — more than three times over the legal limit for adults.

Despite Walker’s arrest, Mobile County police are still trying to figure out why Walker gave the girl the drink.

“During the course of our investigation, we were told complaints were made about this particular teacher,” Parsons told WPMI. “We have other questions as to A: How did it get into the school, B: What other children may be involved.”

Walker was charged with aggravated child abuse. She is due in court on Friday.
