Walker Buehler lands on injured list in Red Sox injury worry

Red Sox starter Walker Buehler has found himself on the injured list just over a month into the MLB season.

Buehler, 30, was placed on the 15-day IL Friday for inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

Buehler was scheduled to start for the Red Sox’s game against the Twins on Friday.

Brayan Bello instead started the 6-1 win.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes that Buehler’s injury is not serious, expecting him to return directly after the 15 days are over.

“Miss two starts and hopefully be back as soon as the days are over,” Cora told reporters.

Before going on the IL, Buehler had a 4-1 record with a 4.28 ERA across six starts for the Red Sox, getting his last win on Saturday against the Guardians.

Before signing a one-year deal worth $21.05 million with the Red Sox in December, Buehler spent his entire career with the Dodgers.

In seven seasons in Los Angeles, Buehler reached the World Series on three occasions, winning in 2020 and 2024, closing out the latter with a save in Game 5 against the Yankees.

Buehler has undergone two Tommy John surgeries in his professional career, with the most recent being in 2022, which caused him to miss the entire 2023 season along with making a late debut in 2024.

His last full season comes in 2021, where he pitched to a 16-4 record with a 2.47 ERA over a career-high 33 starts.

Buehler’s IL stint is the latest addition to a string of injuries for the Red Sox this season.

During Friday’s game, slugger Triston Casas was stretchered off the field after suffering what Cora called a “significant” knee injury.

Right-hander Kutter Crawford has yet to pitch for Boston this season as he deals with patellar tendinopathy in his right knee.

On the bright side, starter Lucas Giolito has recently returned from Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for all of 2024.
