Fears for multiple passengers after helicopter crashes into the ocean near Point Lonsdale

A helicopter has crashed into the ocean off the coast of Victoria, sparking fears for the pilot and multiple passengers. 

Police confirmed three people were in a chopper which was seen crashing into water at Point Lonsdale, near Geelong on the tip of the Bellarine Peninsula just after 10am on Friday.

Ambulance Victoria also responded to the incident, with paramedics rushing to the scene.

All three passengers made it to shore and were located by passersby who contacted emergency services.

Victoria Police said a man and woman, who are yet to be identified, have been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

The third passenger, an unidentified man, has been taken by road to hospital with serious injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the crash with assistance from police.

A woman from Leopold told the Geelong Advertiser she was walking along Point Lonsdale beach when she heard a loud bang but couldn’t see.

‘It was so loud,’ she said.

‘It took 15 or 20 minutes for the army helicopter to arrive.’

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
