A 39-year-old man has been charged after allegedly attacking a 92-year-old woman outside a Melbourne shopping centre.

Police allege the man, who has no fixed address, approached the elderly woman on Douglas Parade in Williamstown around 12.20pm on Wednesday and struck her on the head.

She fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

Members of the public restrained the man until police arrived.

The woman, a Williamstown local, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Local detectives interviewed the man later that day and charged him with intentionally causing injury.
