Devin Williams demoted from closer role after awful start to Yankees career

Aaron Boone said he’s removing Devin Williams from the closer role, at least for now.

Williams has been awful since arriving from Milwaukee in the offseason in a trade that sent Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin to the Brewers.

“He’s just going through it a little bit,” Boone said before the Yankees doubleheader against the Blue Jays Sunday. “We think it’s best for everyone to pull him out of that role and start building that confidence.”

Luke Weaver will “likely” take over as closer, but Boone said he would use “everyone.”

The move comes after another blown save for Williams in Friday’s loss to Toronto.
