A woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly attacked a jogger on a walking trail in Melbourne.

Police said a 24-year-old woman was running on the Merri Creek trail near Fitzroy North about 10.45 am yesterday, when she was allegedly attacked by another woman.

The victim received serious head injuries, and her alleged attacker fled the scene.

Police described the attack as unprovoked.

Bystanders came to the victim’s aid before she was taken to hospital in a non-life-threatening condition.

A 29-year-old woman was arrested in the area a short time later.

She was interviewed by police and then charged with one count of attempted murder, and intentionally causing injury.

She was set to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
