Police say a Porsche Macan crashed in the southbound lanes of the highway at Palmview shortly after midday today.

A man got out of the Porsche, approached a white SsangYong Rexton and allegedly shot the male driver in the arm.

He then allegedly stole the car and fled the scene.

Police say he did not know the man he shot.

Police found the stolen Rexton crashed in Landsborough near Forestry Road about half an hour later.

The man allegedly then stole a grey Mazda 3 but was arrested a short time later near Steve Irwin Way.

Police found the firearm allegedly used in the shooting inside the car.

A woman and man were injured in the initial crash. The woman has since died.

Police are investigating and will provide an update this afternoon.
