A major rescue operation is underway after a car hit a woman and plunged into the Sydney Harbour

A major rescue operation is underway after a car hit a woman, rolled down a boat ramp and plunged into the Sydney Harbour.

Emergency services were called to Manns Point in Greenwich on Sydney’s lower north shore about 4.15pm on Monday following reports a car accelerated through a car park, struck a woman standing on the riverbank and ploughed into the river.

The elderly woman was rescued by two passers-bys who called emergency services.

She was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital suffering a suspected broken ankle, bruises, abrasions and shock.

Officers remain at the scene and are are being assisted at the scene by Water Police and the Dive Unit.

The vehicle is yet to be located and the driver remains unaccounted for.

‘There is no visibility of the car that is in the harbour,’ FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry told 9News.

The car is believed to be up to 10 metres underwater, leading to grave concerns for the driver’s wellbeing.

‘We can’t find the car at the moment because it is so deep, and the information we have is that it has floated off the waves,’ Superintendent Dewberry said.

‘It was taking on water quickly.’

Police divers will explore the bottom of the harbour but, as daylight is fading quickly, it’s unlikely the wreck will recovered before tomorrow.

It’s understood the man was driving his car as part of a family fishing outing.

A woman and family member had exited the car and the man attempted to park when the disaster unfolded, witnesses say.
