Police have launched an investigation after finding the body of a woman at Port Melbourne.

Victoria Police said the woman was found unresponsive in the water near the pier at about 10.40am on Thursday.

The woman, who is yet be formally identified, was found dead at the scene.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be determined.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers
