A weekend away for a group of friends has ended in tragedy with an 18-year-old killed in a ute rollover.

Friends of the young victim gathered in Eltham in Melbourne’s north-east today.

Four men were in the ute on a farm near Bendigo when it rolled yesterday at 5.30pm.

Police said the driver lost control in the paddock and his 18-year-old passenger died at the scene.

The other three were uninjured.

The teens were school mates and played at Eltham Football Club.

The driver, also aged 18, was interviewed by police but later released.

Police are investigating if they had been drinking.
