Supermarket giant Coles is recalling salads containing spinach over fears they could be contaminated.

The recall is for salads containing spinach sold between March 20 and yesterday, March 29.

Coles said impacted products with use-by dates up to April 9 could be contaminated with Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC).

The affected products were sold between March 20 and March 29 at supermarkets and online in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT.

Some products were also sold in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Coles has warned customers to not eat the salad as it could make them ill.

  • Coles Spinach 60g, 120g, 280g and 400g
  • Coles Family Mix Stir Fry 400g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Coles Spinach and Kale 300g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Coles Spinach and Rocket 60g and 120g
  • Coles Beetslaw 320g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Coles 4 Leaf Blend 200g
  • Coles 4 Leaf Mix 120g
  • Coles Baby Leaf & Beet Blend 150g
  • Coles Baby Leaf Blend 300g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Coles Kitchen Green Goddess Salad 300g
  • Coles Mixed Leaf Garden Salad 180g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Coles Mediterranean Style Bowl 185g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Coles Beetslaw Bowl 180g
  • Coles Sweet Potato Superfood Bowl 180g (including South Australia and Northern Territory)

“Food products with microbial contamination may cause illness if consumed,” the supermarket said.

“Any customers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”

E. coli stands for Escherichia coli, which is a type of bacteria.

It can cause cause gastrointestinal illnesses such as diarrhoea.
