The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet yesterday admitted to an “error” after it posted on social media that the government was now in caretaker mode.

The government only enters caretaker mode after an election is called – which was not the case at the time (or now).

The post was deleted after a few minutes.

It was still enough to kick off speculation that Anthony Albanese’s visit to Governor General Sam Mostyn was imminent.

Department head Glyn Davis told the Senate the post was “clearly an error”.

As far as we know, Davis tipped no secret wink to the committee.
