Two men died after their car went off a bridge near Lismore on Wednesday night, while a third female passenger was able to escape the car unharmed

Two men have died after their car left the road overnight and plunged into a river with a young woman coming within inches of her life.

The car went over a bridge into the Richmond River at Fairy Hill, near Lismore in northern NSW, about 10pm on Wednesday.

Miraculously the car’s third occupant, a 22-year-old female passenger, was able to escape the car before it hit the water and was unharmed.

Police Rescue and SES officers are on site and an operation is underway to retrieve the two deceased men from the submerged car.

The ages of the two men are unclear at this stage.

It is understood the woman who escaped ran 2km to raise the alarm.

Police were then on the scene quickly but the rescue operation has since turned into a recovery effort.

A crime scene has been established at Droneys Bridge and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the single vehicle crash.
