An elderly woman has died in hospital after she was spotted struggling in the waters of a popular lake in the darkness of night.

Bystanders saw the 76-year-old woman in trouble in Shearwater Lake in Adelaide’s northern suburbs around 8.30pm on Tuesday and alerted emergency services.

The first police officers on the scene dived into the water and pulled her to the shoreline where they performed CPR on her but she was unresponsive.

The woman, who locals believe to be a neighbour, was rushed to hospital but died on Wednesday.

Resident Josh Page, 17, said the incident sparked a huge emergency response to the lakeside picnic spot and kids play area.

‘I came out here last night because of the sheer amount of ambulance, sop crs, and fire trucks that were here,’ he told the Adelaide Advertiser.

‘There must have been 20 cars out here.
