A terrifying incident unfolded at a popular shopping centre on the Gold Coast, after a man allegedly entered two stores armed with a knife. 

Police were called to Pacific Fair shopping centre in Broadbeach Waters about 11am today over reports a man was armed with a large knife.

The man allegedly entered Rebel Sport and then Big W, where it is understood staff were threatened and forced to lock doors.

Officers arrived at the scene and entered Big W, drawing their weapons before arresting the 34-year-old man without incident. 

No one was injured in the ordeal.

The man is known to police and is expected to be charged.
